Dallas Biker's Guide to Motorcycle Insurance

Motorcycle Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

If you've been driving or riding for any length of time, you know accidents happen, even when you're careful. If you've been in the riding community long, you probably also know motorcycle theft is a problem.

When you buy a Harley® in Dallas, most people go through a lengthy process. They look for a bike they love, but they're also looking for the best value in both their bike and their motorcycle insurance.

Once you find the right bike for you, it's time to protect your investment. Any type of insurance is expensive, so you want to make sure you're receiving value for your hard-earned dollar. We've answered some of the most frequently asked questions about motorcycle insurance to create a comprehensive resource for Dallas bikers.

How Does Motorcycle Insurance Work for Harley® Riders?

Motorcycle insurance works in a way that's similar to car insurance. You choose the type of coverage that fits your needs and budget, and that dictates how much money you receive if something happens.

Like with car insurance, basic liability when it comes to motorcycle insurance pretty much means if it's your fault, insurance will only pay for the damage you do to the other party.

So if you get in a wreck and it's your fault, you have to take care of your own doctor bills and pay to fix any damage to your bike. If you have a passenger along for the ride, there won't be any compensation for their injuries either.

Also, liability doesn't cover bike theft or accidents caused by an uninsured motorist unless your policy says otherwise.

Full coverage or comprehensive coverage is just that. All insurance policies have limits, but if something happens, you're covered up to those limits. Your insurance company will pay for your doctor bills, fix your bike etc. You're just out your deductible.

Like with car insurance, the lower your deductible, typically the higher your payments or premiums. The reverse is also true. If you're comfortable with a high deductible, you can probably save on your motorcycle insurance total.

What does Motorcycle Insurance Cost When You Ride a Harley®?

Again, it's kind of like with cars. Insurance companies want to make more money than they pay out, so they calculate their payment based on their risk.

The cost of motorcycle insurance depends on the value of your ride and your driving record. If you have an expensive bike, motorcycle insurance is more expensive. If you have a lot of accidents or tickets on your driving record, you're a higher risk, and your insurance company will charge you for it.

The reverse is also true. If your bike won't cost a lot to fix or you have a pristine driving record, they'll charge you less. Motorcycle insurance costs can range anywhere from a few hundred dollars a year to several thousand.

Premiums also vary depending on where you live. If you have an apartment in the heart of Dallas, your insurance might charge you more than they do someone living in a rural area outside Rockwall, Heath or Forney.

Why Does Motorcycle Insurance Seem So Expensive?

When you compare your bike insurance to what you pay to insure your other vehicles, it may seem disproportionate. That's because there are different risks with motorcycles.

First, they're harder to see because they're smaller, and sometimes vehicle drivers operate with their heads up their rears. Insurance companies see that reduced visibility as higher risk. Also, when bikers do get in a wreck, they're not as protected, so the chance of severe injury is higher.

Another big factor is the possibility of theft. It's just much easier to steal a bike than it is to steal a car or truck. The good news is, if your Harley® doesn't already come with an anti-theft device or tracking system (most new Harleys® do), we can professionally install one for you. For that, most insurers offer a reduction.

Unfortunately, Texas has some of the highest-priced motorcycle insurance in the nation. The average is $62/month or $729/year.

Do I Have to Have Motorcycle Insurance in Texas?

Yep. You're required to have a minimum of $30,000 worth of bodily injury coverage for each injured person per accident up to $60,000 total, and $25,000 in property damage per accident. Keep in mind, those coverages might not be high enough to cover all your expenses, so you might want to consider an upgrade.

How Does My Harley® Type Impact Insurance Rates?

If you buy a bike designed for speed and agility, your insurance company assumes you will use it for what it was built for. If you buy a premium Touring bike or high-end luxury cruiser, you might ride differently than someone on a sport bike, but if something happens, your motorcycle is expensive to fix. All that factors in to cost.

High-performance sport bikes are often the most expensive to insure. They are more often wrecked and they cost a lot to repair. Cruiser style and Touring bikes tend to be easier on your wallet when it comes to insurance. No matter what type of bike you're interested in, we can help you find motorcycle insurance that's affordable.

How Can I Get the Best Price on Motorcycle Insurance?
